Turn actions into precise formal nouns without hiding responsibility.
From verb clause to noun phrase
Nominalisation changes an action into a noun phrase: presentare la richiesta becomes la presentazione della richiesta; verificare la completezza becomes la verifica della completezza; valutare la proposta becomes la valutazione della proposta. It lets a formal document name a stage or topic compactly. The noun often takes di for the thing affected: la trasmissione dei documenti. Check the article, the preposition, and agreement. A noun phrase does not itself say who acts, so add an actor when responsibility matters.
- L’associazione presenta la richiesta. → La presentazione della richiesta spetta all’associazione.· The association submits the request. → Submission of the request is the association’s task.
- L’ufficio verifica la completezza. → La verifica della completezza spetta all’ufficio.· The office checks completeness. → The completeness check is the office’s task.
- Il comitato valuta la proposta. → La valutazione della proposta spetta al comitato.· The committee assesses the proposal. → Assessment of the proposal is the committee’s task.
- L’ufficio comunica l’esito. → La comunicazione dell’esito avverrà dopo la decisione.· The office communicates the result. → Communication of the result will follow the decision.
Keep agents, time, and status visible
Dense nominalisation can hide who does what or suggest a result already exists. Compare “la valutazione è conclusa” with “la valutazione è prevista”: only the second fits the 8 April case. The association must send the itemised budget and access plan by 15 April at 17:00; the office will check completeness; the committee plans to review by 22 April. When a noun phrase obscures an actor or deadline, return to an active verb. Do not write “l’approvazione della sala” when no approval has occurred.
- La trasmissione dei documenti deve avvenire entro il quindici aprile.· The documents must be sent by 15 April.
- La verifica dei documenti sarà svolta dall’ufficio.· The document check will be done by the office.
- La valutazione nel merito è prevista entro il ventidue aprile.· Assessment of the application is planned by 22 April.
- L’approvazione non è stata deliberata.· Approval has not been decided.
