Che as subject or direct object

Che refers back to a person or thing and can be the subject or direct object within the relative clause. It does not change for gender or number. In «la sala che conserva dodici archi», the hall preserves them; in «la sala che visitiamo», we visit the hall. Keep the antecedent close enough that readers know what che refers to.

  • La sala che conserva dodici archi è al centro.· The hall that preserves twelve arches is in the centre.
  • La sala che visitiamo è al piano principale.· The hall that we visit is on the main floor.
  • Gli archi che vediamo appartenevano al deposito.· The arches that we see belonged to the depot.
  • La guida che parla conosce la storia del luogo.· The guide who speaks knows the place’s history.

Preposition plus cui

Use a preposition plus cui when the relationship needs that preposition: in cui for a place, con cui for a person you speak with, di cui for a topic you talk about. Do not replace in cui with in che in these standard examples. The preposition gives the relation; cui itself does not change form.

  • La stanza in cui si tiene la mostra è a est.· The room in which the exhibition is held is to the east.
  • La guida con cui ho parlato conosce il percorso.· The guide with whom I spoke knows the route.
  • La terrazza di cui scrivo guarda il giardino.· The terrace about which I write faces the garden.
  • Il corridoio attraverso cui passiamo collega le due stanze.· The corridor through which we pass connects the two rooms.

Il quale for a formal, explicit reference

Il quale, la quale, i quali, and le quali agree with the antecedent in gender and number. They can sound more formal than che or cui and may help avoid an unclear reference. A preposition can combine with the article: nel quale, della quale. Use commas when the clause adds a comment rather than identifying which object you mean.

  • La facciata, la quale conserva i mattoni originali, dà sulla piazza.· The façade, which preserves the original bricks, faces the square.
  • Gli archi, i quali appartenevano al deposito, sono ancora visibili.· The arches, which belonged to the depot, are still visible.
  • La stanza nella quale entriamo è vetrata.· The room into which we enter is glass-walled.
  • Le sale, le quali si trovano al piano principale, sono raggiungibili dalla rampa.· The rooms, which are on the main floor, can be reached from the ramp.
