Giada, what question guides this short study of the fictional Pontechiaro library?

The council wants to know whether it is worth extending the trial of fifteen new quiet-study tables for two months.

  • Moderatrice: Da quali fonti parti?

Which sources do you start from?

From two extracts: eight Tuesday entry logs and a short questionnaire given to people in the library.

On the four Tuesdays before the tables, from four to six, the counts were forty, forty-two, thirty-eight, and forty.

The first total is one hundred and sixty. In the same hours on the four later Tuesdays, the counts are forty-seven, fifty-one, forty-nine, and fifty-three.

The second total is two hundred. Comparing the eight logs, I found forty more entries in the four observed afternoons.

  • Moderatrice: Vuol dire quaranta nuovi utenti?

Does that mean forty new users?

No. An entry is not a distinct person. Someone who enters twice can be counted twice, and the log does not track individuals.

Did the tables cause the difference?

  • Giada: Non possiamo dirlo.

We cannot say that. The hours are comparable, but we have no comparison group and did not record exams, weather, or other events.

The observed figure is the difference between counts, not a certain explanation for it.

  • Moderatrice: Che cosa aggiunge il questionario?

    What does the questionnaire add?

  • Giada: Abbiamo invitato venticinque persone a rispondere.

We invited twenty-five people to respond. Eighteen returned the form; seven did not.

Among the eighteen respondents, twelve said the space was easier to use and six reported no change.

  • Moderatrice: Possiamo estendere quel giudizio a tutti gli utenti?

Can we apply that view to all users?

No. The people approached were in the library, and we do not know whether non-respondents would have answered differently.

After reading the forms, I kept people’s opinions separate from the entry counts: they measure different things.

  • Moderatrice: Avete misurato il rumore o raccolto dati sull’accessibilità?

Did you measure noise or collect accessibility information?

No. Noise was not measured, and we did not collect enough information about access needs.

  • Moderatrice: Quale sintesi darai al consiglio?

What summary will you give the council?

Having examined the logs and forms, I will propose extending the trial for two months, keeping the same counting hours.

Before making a permanent decision, the council should separate entries from people, hear from non-users, and check accessibility.

So a short summary must not be too certain.

  • Giada: Esatto.

Exactly. Reducing words does not mean removing the data limits. The recommendation is a longer trial, not a causal conclusion.

First pass: question, evidence, answer

Listen to the full recording first, then use the transcript to check details. Identify Giada’s research question, the two sources, and her recommendation. The case is fictional. The log counts entries; the questionnaire records eighteen answers.

  • Abbiamo confrontato otto registri del martedì.· We compared eight Tuesday logs.
  • Gli accessi osservati sono passati da centosessanta a duecento.· Observed entries went from one hundred and sixty to two hundred.
  • Diciotto persone hanno restituito il questionario.· Eighteen people returned the questionnaire.
  • Propongo di prolungare la prova e raccogliere altri dati.· I propose extending the trial and collecting more data.

Second pass: compact form and limits

Find a gerund with the same actor as its main verb, a past infinitive after dopo, and a participial phrase with a clear noun. Listen for what Giada does not claim: no unique-user count, no noise measurement, and no proven effect of the tables.

  • Confrontando i registri, ho rilevato quaranta accessi in più.· Comparing the logs, I found forty more entries.
  • Dopo aver letto i moduli, ho separato le risposte dai conteggi.· After reading the forms, I kept responses separate from counts.
  • Esaminati i dati, preparo una sintesi prudente.· With the data examined, I prepare a cautious summary.
  • Senza un confronto controllato, non attribuisco il cambiamento ai tavoli.· Without a controlled comparison, I do not attribute the change to the tables.
