Modal verbs in the past
Develop work and study through a focused grammar itinerary.
Repeated duty or one completed need
Use the imperfect of a modal for a repeated past duty, ability, or wish: dovevo, potevo, volevo. Use passato prossimo for a specific completed situation: ho dovuto, ho potuto, ho voluto. The time phrase and the story tell you which meaning is intended. These examples keep the modal with avere and a following infinitive.
- Ogni mese dovevo controllare il calendario.· Each month I had to check the calendar.
- Una volta ho dovuto avvisare gli iscritti.· Once I had to notify the registered people.
- Da studentessa potevo lavorare solo la sera.· As a student I could work only in the evening.
- Ieri ho potuto finire il messaggio in tempo.· Yesterday I was able to finish the message in time.
Choose the form from the context
Identify whether the speaker describes a usual condition or one dated event. Write one sentence about a repeated responsibility at Biblioteca Faro and one about the workshop whose time changed. Do not treat potevo as proof that the speaker completed an action; add a completed verb or use ho potuto if that result is intended.
- Durante il volontariato volevo aiutare i nuovi visitatori.· During my volunteer work I wanted to help new visitors.
- Quel giorno ho voluto controllare ogni indirizzo due volte.· That day I chose to check every address twice.
- Di solito potevo parlare inglese per richieste semplici.· I could usually speak English for simple requests.
- Lunedì ho potuto rispondere a tutte le email.· On Monday I managed to answer all the emails.
