Podcast: Una deviazione utile

Paolo tells one complete first-person story. The transcript is divided into short audio segments for repeat listening; it is not a conversation.

  • Paolo: Benvenuti a Piccole deviazioni.

Welcome to Small Detours. Today I will tell you about a trip that did not go as planned. I wanted to visit a town near a river to write about volunteers. I expected to take photos and then return home.

The night before I had prepared interview questions, charged my camera, and checked the train time. In the morning, however, I left without my ticket. I noticed only at the station and went back home.

When I returned to the platform, the train had already left. I was angry with myself and thought of cancelling. While I looked for another train, I saw a bus to the same town. I bought a ticket and got on.

On the bus I sat next to Teresa, who was also going to the river. She explained that the group cleaned paths after a flood and that residents worked together. Teresa had joined several times and knew nearly everyone. She asked why I carried a camera.

I said I wanted to write an article. Teresa smiled and asked if I wanted to understand the work before photographing it. I had not planned to take part. I had imagined staying outside the group and observing.

When we arrived, the sky was cloudy and the path was still wet. The leader gave us gloves and bags. I left my camera in my bag and helped Teresa gather fallen branches. The work was tiring, but people talked and joked as they worked.

Only after the break did I do the interview. The answers were different from what I expected: people spoke about the river and the relationships made through the work. I took few photos, but for the first time I truly knew what I was photographing.

On the return bus I wrote my article. The missed train had led me down another route and changed my role. I had left as an observer and returned as someone who had worked with others. Since then, I try to know a project closely before describing it.
