Build a clear sequence

Develop what happened? through a focused practice itinerary.

Build a clear past sequence

Use imperfetto for the situation in progress and passato prossimo for the event that changes or advances it. Time markers such as mentre, quando, improvvisamente, poi, and alla fine make the relation clear. Use mentre with two actions in progress; use quando when a completed event interrupts a situation.

  • Mentre aspettavo, ho sentito un annuncio.· While I was waiting, I heard an announcement.
  • Pioveva quando il treno è arrivato.· It was raining when the train arrived.
  • Ero stanco, ma ho continuato il viaggio.· I was tired, but I continued the journey.
  • Prima cercavo il binario; poi ho chiesto aiuto.· First I was looking for the platform; then I asked for help.

Form, meaning, and contrast

Compare the second set of models. Identify the contrast in meaning, then check verb form, agreement, pronoun position, and the logical relation before you produce a new sentence.

  • Improvvisamente le luci si sono spente.· Suddenly the lights went out.
  • Tutti dormivano e nessuno ha risposto.· Everyone was sleeping and no one answered.
  • Alla fine siamo arrivati a destinazione.· In the end we reached our destination.
  • Che cosa stavi facendo quando è successo?· What were you doing when it happened?
