Welcome to Italy

Enter the situation for Tappa 1 and learn the first useful language.

The situation

You have just arrived at a language school in Rome. You meet the receptionist and another student. Learn the short expressions that let you enter the conversation, give your name, and show polite interest.

Italian often uses fewer words than English. A complete answer can be short because the verb ending already identifies the speaker.

  • Buongiorno, mi chiamo Alex.· Good morning, my name is Alex.
  • Piacere, sono Giulia.· Nice to meet you, I am Giulia.
  • Come ti chiami?· What is your name? (informal)
  • Come si chiama?· What is your name? (formal)

First language map

Read the models aloud. Notice the repeated sentence frames. Change only one detail at a time until the pattern is secure.

  • Di dove sei?· Where are you from? (informal)
  • Sono di Manchester.· I am from Manchester.
  • Come stai?· How are you? (informal)
  • Bene, grazie. E tu?· Fine, thank you. And you?
