Italian word formation: prefixes, suffixes and compounds
How Italian builds words: prefixes (ri-, dis-, in-, s-), suffixes (-zione, -tore, -bile, -mente), compounds, conversion, and how to infer meaning.
Most long Italian words are built from smaller parts. Word formation (formazione delle parole) describes the processes. Derivation adds a prefix or a suffix to a base: «leggere» gives «rileggere», «leggibile», «lettura». Composition joins two words: «apri» + «scatole» gives «apriscatole». Conversion moves a word into another class without any affix: «il sapere», «il bello», «i pro e i contro». Alteration («casetta», «librone») is a separate, evaluative process, covered under altered nouns.
Knowing these processes pays off in two ways. You can decode unfamiliar words by taking them apart: «inaffidabilità» is in- + affida(re) + -bile + -ità, “unreliability”. And you can learn words in families rather than one at a time: «giusto», «ingiusto», «giustizia», «ingiustizia», «giustificare», «giustificazione», «ingiustificato». The caveat is that the system is not fully regular: always check that the word you build exists and means what you think.
| Process | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Prefix | ri- + leggere → rileggere | to reread |
| Prefix | dis- + onesto → disonesto | dishonest |
| Suffix: verb → noun | gestire → gestione | management |
| Suffix: verb → adjective | lavare → lavabile | washable |
| Suffix: adjective → adverb | rapida → rapidamente | quickly |
| Compound | lava + stoviglie → lavastoviglie | dishwasher |
| Conversion | dovere → il dovere | duty |
| Prefix and suffix together | a- + bottone + -are → abbottonare | to button up |
Prefixes: negation, repetition, degree and position
Prefixes change the meaning of a word but not its class. The negative in- assimilates to the following sound: it stays in- before vowels and most consonants («inutile», «incapace»), becomes im- before b, m and p («impossibile», «immaturo», «imprevisto»), il- before l («illegale») and ir- before r («irregolare», «irresponsabile»). Dis- expresses opposition or reversal («disonesto», «disaccordo», «disfare»), and s- often does the same («scaricare», «scongelare», «sconosciuto», «sfortunato»).
Ri- expresses repetition or return: «rileggere», «riaprire», «ritornare». Many ri- words have drifted, though: «riguardare» also means “to concern”, and «ricordare» and «riuscire» contain no idea of “again” at all.
Other productive prefixes give position, time and degree: pre- and post- («prevedere», «postbellico»), anti- and contro- («antidemocratico», «controproducente»), sotto- and sovra- («sottovalutare», «sovraffollato»), co- («coautore»), inter- and intra- («internazionale», «intramuscolare»), and super-, iper-, ultra- and stra- for intensity («superaffollato», «ipersensibile», «ultraleggero», «stracarico»).

Suffixes: changing the word class
Suffixes usually change the word class, and each family has a few frequent patterns. Nouns from verbs name the action or its result («gestione», «cambiamento», «lettura», «montaggio», or no suffix at all, as in «il controllo»); this is the basis of nominal style, covered under nominalisation. Agent nouns name the person who does something: -tore and -trice («traduttore», «traduttrice»), -ante and -ente («cantante», «insegnante»), -ista («giornalista»), -aio and -iere («fornaio», «cameriere»). Quality nouns come from adjectives: «responsabile» gives «responsabilità», «bello» «bellezza», «trasparente» «trasparenza», «efficace» «efficacia», «reale» «realtà».
Adjectives come from nouns with -ale, -ile, -oso, -ico and -ivo («culturale», «giovanile», «nervoso», «storico», «sportivo») and from verbs with -bile, meaning “that can be done” («lavabile», «raggiungibile»), or -evole («piacevole»). Verbs come from nouns and adjectives with -izzare, -ificare and -eggiare («organizzare», «digitalizzare», «semplificare», «passeggiare»). Adverbs add -mente to the feminine singular of the adjective («lenta» gives «lentamente»), and adjectives ending in -le or -re after a vowel drop their final e: «facilmente», «regolarmente».
| Suffix | Makes | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| -zione, -mento, -tura | action nouns | gestione, cambiamento, lettura |
| -tore, -trice, -ista | agent nouns | traduttore, giornalista |
| -ità, -ezza, -enza | quality nouns | facilità, bellezza, trasparenza |
| -ale, -oso, -ico, -ivo | adjectives from nouns | culturale, nervoso, storico |
| -bile, -evole | adjectives from verbs | lavabile, piacevole |
| -izzare, -ificare | verbs | organizzare, semplificare |
| -mente | adverbs | lentamente, facilmente |

Compounds, conversion and parasynthesis
Italian compounds most often join a verb and a noun: «apriscatole», «cavatappi», «lavastoviglie», «portafoglio», «asciugamano», «grattacielo». They are usually masculine, though «lavastoviglie» is normally feminine, and their plurals vary. When the noun inside is already plural, the compound is invariable («gli apriscatole», «i cavatappi»); when it is a masculine singular noun, it usually takes the plural («i portafogli», «gli asciugamani», «i grattacieli»). Other types join two nouns («capostazione», plural «capistazione»), an adjective and a noun («francobollo», «francobolli»), or a noun and an adjective («cassaforte», «casseforti»). In loose compounds of two separate nouns, only the first changes: «la parola chiave» gives «le parole chiave», «il viaggio lampo» «i viaggi lampo». Learned compounds use Greek and Latin elements: «biologia», «cronometro», «telefono».
Conversion changes the class with no affix. Infinitives become nouns («il potere», «il dovere», «il piacere»), adjectives become nouns («il bello», «i giovani», «gli anziani»), participles become nouns («il laureato», «la scoperta», «l’insegnante»), and even a conjunction or adverb can become a noun: «Mi spieghi il perché?».
Parasynthesis (parasintesi) adds a prefix and a suffix at the same time, typically to turn a noun or adjective into a verb: a- + «bottone» + -are gives «abbottonare» (with the consonant doubled after a-), in- + «vecchio» + -are «invecchiare», s- + «barca» + -are «sbarcare», a- + «rosso» + -ire «arrossire», in- + «bottiglia» + -are «imbottigliare». Neither half exists on its own: Italian has no «bottonare» and no «vecchiare». These verbs usually mean “make or become X” or “put into, or out of, X”.
- Ho comprato due asciugamani e un apriscatole. · I bought two towels and a can opener.
- Le parole chiave del dibattito sono state lavoro e casa. · The key words of the debate were jobs and housing.
- Con gli anni il centro storico si è svuotato ed è invecchiato. · Over the years the old town has emptied and grown old.
Word families and inferring meaning
When you meet an unknown word, take it apart from the outside in: remove the ending and the outermost suffix, then any prefix, and identify the base. «Irraggiungibile» is ir- + raggiung(ere) + -ibile, “unreachable”; «ridimensionamento» is ri- + dimension(e) + -are + -mento, “downsizing, scaling back”. Then check the result against the context: the parts give the direction of the meaning, the context gives the exact sense.
Three cautions. First, meanings drift: «convenire» is not simply con- + «venire», and «ricordare» has no “again” in it. Second, many words were formed in Latin rather than in Italian, so their base can look different from the modern word: the established form is «irreparabile», from Latin reparabilis, not «irriparabile». Third, an existing word can block a new one: from «lento» the noun is «lentezza», not «lentità», and from «felice» it is «felicità», not «felicezza».
Building families is the most efficient way to grow vocabulary at C1, because one base unlocks many words. From the root of «fidarsi» you reach «fiducia», «fiducioso», «sfiducia», «affidare», «affidabile», «inaffidabile» and «affidabilità». How alteration changes tone rather than meaning is covered under altered nouns.
- Il direttore è stato irraggiungibile per tutta la mattina. · The director was unreachable all morning.
- L’azienda ha annunciato un ridimensionamento del personale. · The company announced staff cuts.
- Negli ultimi anni è cresciuta la sfiducia verso le istituzioni. · Distrust of institutions has grown in recent years.
