Deep subordination
Make each condition attach to the right claim.
Map the dependency, not just the verbs
Return to the fictional Bellacqua report. In «Il rapporto che Elena ha firmato, benché descriva tre aperture proposte, non autorizza il servizio prima che il comitato abbia verificato personale e accessibilità e abbia votato», the main clause is «Il rapporto non autorizza il servizio». The relative «che Elena ha firmato» identifies the report. The concessive «benché descriva» acknowledges what it contains, but does not grant approval. The temporal «prima che ... abbia verificato ... e abbia votato» names what must precede authorisation. The two verbs after «prima che» share the same committee subject. Draw this hierarchy before translating or editing it.
- Il rapporto che Elena ha firmato non è una delibera.· The report that Elena signed is not a resolution.
- Benché descriva il pilota, il rapporto non lo autorizza.· Although it describes the pilot, the report does not authorise it.
- Non annunciamo l’apertura prima che il comitato abbia votato.· We do not announce opening before the committee has voted.
- Il comitato deve verificare il personale e l’accessibilità.· The committee must check staffing and accessibility.
Control mood, scope and factual status
In these constructions, «benché» introduces a concessive clause with the subjunctive «descriva»; «prima che» introduces the not-yet-completed prior action with «abbia verificato» and «abbia votato»; and «qualora» introduces a possible condition with «approvi». Do not confuse grammatical subordination with evidence: a well-formed conditional does not say the vote happened. Use a full stop when one sentence forces readers to hold too many dependencies. The exact alternative is: «Il rapporto descrive tre aperture proposte. Tuttavia non autorizza il servizio: occorrono le verifiche e il voto».
- Qualora il comitato approvi il pilota, Chiara conterà gli ingressi.· If the committee approves the pilot, Chiara will count entries.
- Benché i commenti siano utili, non rappresentano tutti i residenti.· Although the comments are useful, they do not represent all residents.
- Prima che si pubblichi un calendario, servono due verifiche.· Before a schedule is published, two checks are needed.
- Il rapporto descrive una proposta. Il voto, invece, manca.· The report describes a proposal. The vote, however, is missing.
