Describe variation precisely
A geosinonimo is one of several words used for the same referent in different areas. A regionalismo is a form associated with an area; it need not have a neat equivalent everywhere. Italiano regionale is Italian with locally patterned features, not a single uniform dialect assigned to an administrative region. Registro describes suitability for a situation and relationship. These are descriptions of usage, not measures of a person’s competence or worth.
- «Anguria» e «cocomero» sono geosinonimi.· “Anguria” and “cocomero” are geographical synonyms.
- Un regionalismo non coincide sempre con un dialetto.· A regionalism is not always the same as a dialect.
- Il registro dipende dal destinatario e dallo scopo.· Register depends on the addressee and purpose.
- Una regione amministrativa non ha per forza una sola varietà.· An administrative region does not necessarily have one variety.
Ask rather than assume
Use varietà, uso, contesto, destinatario, familiarità, and provenienza with care. «Come lo chiami tu?» invites a speaker’s own preference; «Da voi si dice sempre così?» assumes too much. Speakers can change wording across groups and situations. A local form may be familiar beyond its traditional area. At the exhibition, include a short gloss so visitors can understand a word without being asked to imitate an accent.
- Come lo chiami tu? Non conoscevo questa variante.· What do you call it? I did not know this variant.
- In quest’area si usa spesso «cocomero».· In this area “cocomero” is often used.
- Il cartello spiega «michetta»: un tipo di panino.· The label explains “michetta”: a type of bread roll.
- Non deduciamo la provenienza di una persona da una sola parola.· We do not infer a person’s origin from one word.
