Narrate from a chosen viewpoint
Tell the bridge story to a history class, then change perspective.
Speak as Marta to a local history class
Give a two-minute first-person account as Marta in 2018. Your listeners are students who have read the archive times. Start with what you felt at about 16:40 on 12 November 1998; explain your fear without asserting a collapse. Then explain what you learned later: Paolo received the loose-joint report at 17:05, the municipality closed the bridge at 17:20, Elena found the notice logged at 18:10, and a route was posted the next morning. Use imperfetto for background, a bounded past form for the sensation, trapassato for an earlier event, and a past subjunctive after a verb of fear or doubt.
- Mentre attraversavo il ponte, sentii un movimento.· While I was crossing the bridge, I felt movement.
- Temevo che il ponte cedesse, ma non ne conoscevo la causa.· I feared the bridge might give way, but I did not know the cause.
- Quando lessi l’avviso, il Comune aveva già chiuso il ponte.· When I read the notice, the municipality had already closed the bridge.
- Oggi posso distinguere il mio timore dal rapporto tecnico.· Today I can distinguish my fear from the technical report.
Change narrator and answer a challenge
Now give a 60-second third-person summary as Elena, using only dated records and attributed testimony. A student asks, “Did Marta’s crossing cause the defect?” Answer in 20–30 seconds: neither the memoir nor the report establishes that cause. Compare your two versions: which pronouns, tense anchors, and statements of certainty changed? Repeat the second version without notes. No recording or automatic speaking assessment is supplied.
- Marta ricordò di aver avvertito un movimento.· Marta recalled feeling movement.
- Il rapporto indicava un giunto allentato, non la causa del movimento.· The report indicated a loose joint, not the cause of the movement.
- Non risulta che il passaggio di Marta abbia causato il difetto.· The record does not show that Marta’s crossing caused the defect.
- L’avviso fu registrato dopo che il ponte era stato chiuso.· The notice was logged after the bridge had been closed.
