Spoken interaction and discourse markers

Use small words to manage a fast, clear exchange.

Open, shift, and clarify

Allora can open or restart a turn; a proposito introduces a related point; cioè repairs or clarifies wording; comunque returns to a point despite a limit. These markers help listeners follow the group’s plan. They do not turn an unknown room into a confirmed one.

  • Allora, che cosa diciamo alla riunione?· So, what do we say at the meeting?
  • A proposito, quale sala ci daranno?· By the way, which room will they give us?
  • Venti sedie, cioè non venti iscritti.· Twenty chairs, that is, not twenty registrants.
  • Comunque la locandina resta una bozza.· In any case, the poster remains a draft.

Summarise, yield, and check

Insomma can signal a short conclusion; aspetta un attimo asks for a pause; se ho capito bene checks understanding; d’accordo confirms agreement. Use these chunks to manage interruptions without losing the speaker’s meaning. In a public update, replace vague shorthand with explicit dates and roles.

  • Insomma, aspettiamo la risposta di venerdì.· In short, we wait for Friday’s reply.
  • Aspetta un attimo: la sala non è ancora confermata.· Wait a moment: the room is not confirmed yet.
  • Se ho capito bene, Sara controllerà l’accesso dopo la conferma.· If I understood correctly, Sara will check access after confirmation.
  • D’accordo, non pubblichiamo la bozza oggi.· Agreed, we will not publish the draft today.
