Conditional period type 2
Develop real and unreal choices through a focused practice itinerary.
Conditional period type 2
Use a hypothetical present or future condition when you imagine a situation that is not real or is unlikely. The se-clause takes the imperfect subjunctive; the result takes the present conditional: «Se fossi in te, accetterei l’offerta». The order can change: «Accetterei l’offerta se fossi in te». Do not use the present conditional immediately after se.
- Se fossi in te, accetterei l’offerta.· If I were you, I would accept the offer.
- Se potessimo, resteremmo più a lungo.· If we could, we would stay longer.
- Se avessi più tempo, studierei italiano ogni giorno.· If I had more time, I would study Italian every day.
- Se abitasse vicino, verrebbe a piedi.· If she lived nearby, she would come on foot.
Form and meaning contrast
Compare «Se piove, resto a casa» (a possible event) with «Se piovesse, resterei a casa» (an imagined event). Common imperfect subjunctive forms include fossi, avessi, potessi, and venissi. A wish with «vorrei che» also takes the imperfect subjunctive, but it is not itself a se-clause. Check both halves of your sentence before you speak.
- Se piove, resto a casa.· If it rains, I will stay at home.
- Se piovesse, resterei a casa.· If it rained, I would stay at home.
- Vorrei che venissi con noi.· I would like you to come with us.
- Se fossi in te, ne parlerei con lei.· If I were you, I would talk to her about it.
Imagine a different policy constraint
Use the imperfect subjunctive after se and the present conditional for the result. The current fictional budget is €120,000. A larger budget or lower price is only an imagined scenario, not a fact. Compare that imagined case with what the council can really decide now.
- Se avessimo duecentomila euro, valuteremmo entrambe le proposte.· If we had two hundred thousand euros, we would assess both proposals.
- Se il costo fosse minore, resterebbero più fondi.· If the cost were lower, more funds would remain.
- Se le fermate fossero già accessibili, il controllo sarebbe più semplice.· If the stops were already accessible, the check would be simpler.
- Se conoscessimo il numero degli utenti serali, sceglieremmo con più sicurezza.· If we knew the number of evening users, we would choose with more confidence.
