Tense and reference changes

Move from a 12 May statement to a 13 May report.

Anchor every time word

Marta spoke on 12 May 2026; the article was written on 13 May. Her domani means 13 May, not 14 May. Use the exact date when it avoids doubt. Her oggi means 12 May. Ieri in the article also means 12 May. Do not replace every time word mechanically without checking the two dates.

  • Marta: «Le iscrizioni apriranno domani». → Marta ha detto che le iscrizioni sarebbero state aperte il 13 maggio.· Marta: “Registration will open tomorrow.” → Marta said registration would open on 13 May.
  • Marta: «Oggi presentiamo il piano». → Marta ha detto che il suo ufficio presentava il piano quel giorno, 12 maggio.· Marta: “Today we present the plan.” → Marta said her office was presenting the plan that day, 12 May.
  • L’articolo del 13 maggio dice: «Ieri si è tenuta la conferenza».· The article of 13 May says: “The conference took place yesterday.”
  • La parola «domani» cambia riferimento quando cambia il giorno del racconto.· The word “tomorrow” changes reference when the reporting day changes.

Report a plan, not an outcome

A future event seen from a past announcement can use the past conditional: Marta ha annunciato che il modulo sarebbe stato pubblicato. It says what she announced, not whether publication occurred. Keep the conditional start date conditional. State what needs a fresh check before changing a reported plan into a news fact.

  • Marta: «Pubblicheremo il modulo». → Marta ha annunciato che il modulo sarebbe stato pubblicato.· Marta: “We will publish the form.” → Marta announced that the form would be published.
  • Secondo Marta, il 3 giugno era una data possibile per l’inizio.· According to Marta, 3 June was a possible start date.
  • Il 13 maggio era la data delle iscrizioni, non quella dell’inizio.· 13 May was the registration date, not the start date.
  • Prima di dire che il modulo è online, bisogna controllare il sito.· Before saying that the form is online, one must check the site.
