Independent strategies

Check a source, repair a misunderstanding, and choose the right register.

Read the latest source before you act

A first plan can change. Compare the original timetable with the later delay notice. Use the newest stated time, but do not invent an arrival that the notice does not give. For the public-square proposal, separate an official decision from a person’s opinion. If a detail is missing, make a question rather than an assumption.

  • Secondo l’avviso, il nuovo arrivo è previsto alle 10:55.· According to the notice, the new arrival is expected at 10:55.
  • Il programma indica che l’incontro inizia alle 16:00.· The programme says that the meeting starts at 16:00.
  • Non so se l’ingresso principale abbia un percorso senza gradini.· I do not know whether the main entrance has a step-free route.
  • Il gruppo ha proposto la prova, ma il consiglio non l’ha approvata.· The group proposed the trial, but the council did not approve it.

Repair and continue the conversation

In a practical call, repeat the detail you understood, ask about the missing part, and confirm the next action. Use Lei with a person you do not know in a formal service role. A combined pronoun is useful only when the listener can identify both the receiver and the object.

  • Mi scusi, potrebbe ripetere l’indirizzo dell’ingresso laterale?· Excuse me, could you repeat the side-entrance address?
  • Se ho capito bene, entro dalla porta di Via del Porto.· If I understood correctly, I enter through the door on Via del Porto.
  • Non le ho ancora mandato l’avviso del ritardo; glielo invio ora.· I have not yet sent you the delay notice; I will send it to you now.
  • La ringrazio. Allora ci vediamo alla biblioteca alle 11:15.· Thank you. Then I will see you at the library at 11:15.
