Ask for and give directions

Produce a short spoken response with the grammar and vocabulary from this Tappa.

Fictional street map: a station in the north-west; Hotel Roma and a museum between Via Roma and Via Dante; a bank, pharmacy, and supermarket south of Via Dante; bus stops by the station and Via Manzoni.
Fictional map for speaking practice. Start at the station. The map is not to scale.

Speaking task

Use the fictional map above. Start at the station and choose the pharmacy, hotel, museum, or bank. The traveller must ask about destination, approximate distance, and transport. The map has no scale, so do not invent a distance in metres or minutes. The resident must give at least four steps and two landmarks.

Repeat the route in your own words to confirm it.

  • Mi scusi, c’è una farmacia qui vicino?· Excuse me, is there a pharmacy near here?
  • Sì, è in via Dante.· Yes, it is on Via Dante.
  • Come ci arrivo?· How do I get there?
  • Attraversi questa strada.· Cross this street.

Model language

Plan with keywords, not a complete script. Speak once slowly for accuracy, then a second time with more natural rhythm.

  • Prenda la seconda a sinistra.· Take the second street on the left.
  • La farmacia è accanto al supermercato.· The pharmacy is next to the supermarket.
  • Posso prendere l’autobus?· Can I take the bus?
  • No, è più facile a piedi.· No, it is easier on foot.
